When building a skincare routine, most people focus on what to add.
But what you choose to leave out can be just as important.
Certain ingredients—while commonly used—may contribute to irritation, dryness, or long-term skin imbalance, especially with repeated exposure. Understanding these ingredients helps you make more informed, skin-supportive choices.
-
Parabens in Skincare
Parabens (such as methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben) are used to extend shelf life by preventing bacterial growth.
They’ve been studied for their potential to mimic estrogen in the body, which has raised concerns around hormone disruption.
While research is ongoing, many people now prefer paraben-free skincare as a precaution.
-
Phthalates (Often Hidden in Fragrance)
Phthalates are commonly used to help fragrances last longer.
The issue? They’re rarely listed clearly and often appear under the general term “fragrance.”
Some studies have linked phthalates to hormone disruption, making them one of the more controversial ingredients in skincare.
-
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
These ingredients are responsible for the foamy, cleansing effect in many face washes and shampoos.
While effective at removing dirt and oil, they can also strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier—leading to dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity.
For many skin types, especially sensitive skin, gentle, sulfate-free cleansers are a better option.
-
Synthetic Fragrance / Parfum
Fragrance is one of the most common causes of skin irritation.
Because it can include dozens (or even hundreds) of undisclosed chemicals, it’s difficult to pinpoint what may be triggering a reaction.
If you experience redness, breakouts, or sensitivity, switching to fragrance-free skincare can make a noticeable difference.
-
Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
These ingredients help prevent microbial growth in products.
However, they can release small amounts of formaldehyde over time—a known irritant and classified carcinogen in certain contexts.
Even in low concentrations, they may cause sensitivity for some individuals.
-
Polyethylene Glycol (PEGs)
PEGs are used to improve product texture and enhance absorption.
Depending on how they’re manufactured, they may be contaminated with potentially harmful byproducts. They can also be more irritating on compromised skin.
-
Oxybenzone and Chemical Sunscreens
Oxybenzone is commonly used in chemical sunscreens to absorb UV rays.
While effective, it has raised concerns due to its ability to penetrate the skin and its potential link to hormone disruption.
If you have sensitive skin, you may prefer mineral-based sunscreens as an alternative.
-
Mineral Oil & Petrolatum
These ingredients are used to lock in moisture by forming a barrier on the skin.
While effective for preventing water loss, they don’t actively nourish the skin—and for some, they may feel heavy or contribute to clogged pores.
-
Triclosan
Triclosan is an antibacterial ingredient once widely used in personal care products.
It has been linked to hormone disruption and may contribute to antibiotic resistance, which has led to increased regulation and reduced use.
-
BHA & BHT
These synthetic antioxidants help extend product shelf life.
They’ve been associated with skin irritation and potential long-term concerns in some studies, especially with frequent exposure.
Are “Clean” Skincare Labels Reliable?
Terms like “clean,” “non-toxic,” and “all-natural” are widely used—but not always regulated.
This means they don’t always guarantee that a product is free from potentially irritating or controversial ingredients.
The most reliable approach is simple:
check the ingredient list and understand what’s inside your products.
How to Choose Safer Skincare Products
Instead of focusing only on what to avoid, look for products that support your skin with:
- Gentle, non-stripping cleansers
- Hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients
- Minimal unnecessary additives
- Transparent ingredient lists
What We Choose to Leave Out
At Bella Jade, we believe skincare should support your skin—not work against it.
That’s why we never use ingredients like parabens, phthalates, sulfates (SLS/SLES), synthetic fragrance, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, PEGs, oxybenzone, triclosan, or BHA/BHT.
Every formula is created with intention—focused on ingredients that nourish, protect, and maintain your skin’s natural balance.
Because healthy skin isn’t about doing more. It’s about choosing better—and choosing what’s safe for your skin and your body.
